I wanted to share a couple of cards I made using the sponging technique. This technique is a great way to add an interesting background to your cards.
First of all, to block of the part I wanted to colour, I cut out a U-shaped template from a 6×6 piece of light cardboard as shown below.
By doing this I ensured the cut out was 1 1/2” in width, which is what I wanted, but you could make it wider if desired. With a template, I don’t have to use a bunch of paper and tape to mark out my block, plus I can re-use the template for a second or third card. I used small pieces of washi tape to secure my card base to scrap paper then placed the template over the card and secured it with more washi tape as shown. I like using washi tape because it easily removes and doesn’t pull on the paper like some painter tape does. Once all is secured, I am ready to go.
I sponged the various colours I wanted to use across the blocked area. There really is no right or wrong way to do this, however I would recommend overlapping the colours so there are no hard lines. While doing this, you have to wonder, right? It’s not very impressive and looks rather messy as you can see, but once you remove the template you will see how cool it looks. I then stamped the images and sentiments from the “Prized Peony” stamp set in Tuxedo Momento ink over the coloured background. I absolute love how it looks and there are so many colour possibilities. To complete the card, I added a mat in a coordinating colour to the card front then applied it to a black card base which just makes the card front pop even more. I then stamped a sentiment to another piece of card stock and applied it to the inside of the card.
