Tips and Techniques – Scoring Tips

Today, I would like to offer some tips on using your scoring tool. Before I talk about the various ways scoring will help you, I want to just go over the tools first. To see more information about each product, just click on each link which will bring you to my online store. Should you decide to make a purchase, please use the March Host Code 3JTVASQ6 to be entered into my monthly draw.

Simply Scored tool

Let’s start with the Simply Scored scoring tool. This board is a complete system for flawless scoring. The Base size is slightly larger than 12″ x 12″ to accommodate 12″ x 12″ card stock and paper. The base has grooves etched every 1/8″ so you can choose how far apart you want the score marks to be. There is a ruler on both the top and left side for easy reference and includes three place markers and one Stylus tool with both a small end for Card stock and larger end for DSP. It’s so easy to line up your card stock and score at whatever measurement you need. When you run the Stylus tool along the groved lines it creates a small indent on your card stock which allows you to cleanly fold your card stock or DSP along that line.

Paper Trimmer

This Paper Trimmer not only cuts your paper but also allows you to score it. Do you see the two cutting blades? The dark one is used to cut card stock up to 12″ (the arm on the left side flips open) and the lighter blade is your scoring tool. It’s so easy to cut your paper to make a card and turn it around to score it in half. CAUTION: Make sure you are using the right blade to score or you could end up cutting the paper in error. I know some people have labeled them with a “C” and “S” to easily remember at a glance.

The Bone Folder is a small tool which I use all the time. When you run the Stylus tool along the groved lines to score, it creates a small indent on your card stock which allows you to cleanly fold your card stock or DSP along that line. I then run my my Bone Folder over the folded card stock to give it a nice clean and crisp fold line.

So now you know the tools, I want to provide you with a few ways to use them. If you don’t have one, you are missing out. I really think that we don’t appreciate how helpful scoring tools can be. Creating a box

As you can see in this picture, I scored lines to create a gift box. By lining up my paper on the scoring tool, I was able to create nice even lines which I was then able to fold up to create my gift box. It makes putting this gift box together so easy. All I need to do now is add some adhesive to hold it together.

In this picture, I used my scoring tool to add some texture to the front of my card. When you flip over the paper after scoring, you will see a nice STRAIGHT ridge on the opposite side which adds some texture to your card or paper project. If you make a small error and score too far, you can gently use your Stylus tool on the ridge side to gently press it back and erase your error.

In this example, I scored the lines to create a brick shape. It makes for an interesting background, don’t you think?

Add a little sponging to highlight the brick shapes and you have a nice brick background for your card.

My template

You can also create a diamond shape just by turning your paper. In my example, I created a corner template by cutting a 4″ x 4″ piece of scrap cardboard and then cutting it diagonally. Once this is placed in the corner of the Simple Scored scoring tool, I lined up my paper along the template, I am still scoring straight lines but at an angle. By turning the paper around 180 degrees you can score the opposite angles. How cool is that?

I now have a lovely lattice background for my card. I am pretty pleased how the back grounds add a little something to card fronts and it’s so easy to do.

As you can see from the above examples scoring allows you to create some interesting looks. You are only limited by your imagination so I encourage you to play with your scoring tool to see all the amazing ways you can make it work for you. Think pleated paper, chevron patter, just to name a couple.
