Tips and Techniques – Reverse stamping

Do you have a particular stamp image that is just facing the wrong direction and you wish that it faced the opposite direction? Well by reverse stamping, you will be able to do just that and it’s so easy that you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it before. This is also a great technique for creating water reflections of trees if you are doing a nature inspired project

Reverse Stamping, is also called Mirror Image Stamping. It is a quick and easy technique to make the most of the stamps you have by extending your stamping possibilities and we all love that.

Reverse stamping Technique

First, make sure your Silicone sheet is clean for a good stamped image. To clean beforehand, just run it under the tap and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Hand cleaner or Stampin’ Mist also work well. If you don’t have a Silicone Sheet, a piece of clear Window sheet will also work but there is more chance of smudging it with the window sheet.

Stamp your first image onto your card stock leaving enough space to add a second stamp, remembering that it will be reversed. In my example, I am using the stamp from the Zany Zebra’s stamp set which includes three adorable zebras to choose from.

You can do this with just your stamp and acrylic block but if you want exact placement on your card, you can also use your stamparatus.

Now give your stamp a good inking up and stamp the same image on your clean Silicone sheet as shown.

You don’t need to use a special ink for this, regular Momento Tuxedo black ink will work just fine.

If you are using the stamparatus, just replace the card stock with your Silicone Sheet and then stamp again.

Flip over the Silicone Sheet and you can now see how the image is reversed though the sheet.

Position and place the image over your card stock, beside your first stamped image and gently run your hand over the image to transfer it to the card stock.

If you are using the stamparatus, replace the Silicone sheet with your original card stock then place your silicon sheet over it and press down.

Voila! you now have two images facing each other, pretty cool right?

You can see how the images are now mirrored to one another. At this point, you can continue to proceed with your card or paper project.

To clean off the ink on your Silicone Sheet, just wipe with a damp cloth. How easy was that?

This is just one of my finished cards I made using the reverse stamping technique.

I also used my Balloon Bouquet Punch to punch out the balloons and tied them up with some linen thread.

Now you may think that having this sheet is only good for one thing, and it’s simply not true. Reverse stamping is just one way to use this sheet. Before I talk about it’s other uses, I want to highlight the Silicone Sheet’s features;

  • Each sheet is 6″ x 6″ in size and very flexible
  • The sheet is a also translucent so you can see through it
  • It’s is made of nonstick material and is a heat resistant silicone so if you want to use a glue gun, you can also glue on it. It will also keep any excess bits of glue off our project as well

The Silicone Sheet (item #127853) at just $8.25 will save you a lot of time and trouble with your regular crafting as well. I use mine every day when crafting and I find it invaluable, plus it helps to keep my workspace clean. If you have a Silicone Sheet, you probably know some uses for it already but if you are new to crafting and don’t know what I am talking about, here are some additional ways to use your Silicone sheet.

  • Just by adding a dollop of Multipurpose Liquid Glue on the Silicone Sheet you can do the following;
    • Place embellishments on the glue then lift them with your Take Your Pick tool and add to your project. This way you have won’t have any excess glue on your card base (or your fingers)
    • You can sponge some of the glue lightly on Vellum and the glue won’t show through when you place the vellum on your project. (fyi, glue dots show through)
    • You can also do the same with detailed dies. If you don’t have and Adhesive sheets (an awesome product by the way) and want to glue down every little bit, you can lightly sponge liquid glue over the die cut outs to evenly cover it with glue, while keeping the excess glue off your card base (and fingers) before adding to your card or paper project
    • You can also run your Stampin’ Seal right up to the very edge of your paper so there are no gaps. If you go over the edge, it won’t matter because the excess glue remains on the silicone sheet and doesn’t mess up card or project.
  • Do you like to watercolour? Take your ink refill bottle and add a drop or two of ink onto your Silicone Sheet. Now using your Water Painter Brush , just mix it up right on the silicone and create a nice water colour wash to your card or project.
  • Once you are done using it, Just wipe the silicone sheet with a damp cloth or you can run it under the tap to clean
    • If you forget to clean it, no problem, just run it under the tap to clean. For dried bits of glue, they will just peel off easily by rubbing it with your finger.
