Tips and Techniques – Card Templates

Have you ever sat down to make a card or craft project and then went blank. Nothing comes to mind to inspire you. It’s similar to a writer looking at a blank piece of paper (or a screen document) and you just sit there and think what can I make? Well today I would like to help you with that and the answer is card templates. These are a great way to be inspired when you just can’t think of anything at the moment.

Card templates can be just a hand drawn design of a previous card you have made or a new design you saw someone else make. Changing up the paper, the colours, the ink and the sentiment will make a a completely different look to your card and will help you just get going with your crafting.

Hand drawn template

So to get started, I just took a piece of paper, drew up a couple of rectangles and a circle. I added a piece along the bottom thinking I would add a piece of ribbon. How easy is that, right? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Now choose your card stock as your base, then choose coordinating colours to go with it. You could also go with contrasting colours to make it really stand out. Don’t adhere anything together just yet, just continue to cut out your paper, move things around until you are happy with it. it may change several times before you are done and that’s ok.

Now select any stamp/dies and ink that you want to use. Stamp a few images on scrap paper until you have something you are happy with. You can also just use any patterned paper you have on hand and that is ok as well. This process is designed to get your imagination going and once you start it will get easier to put something together.

Don’t forget to add some bling in the form of gemstones, ribbon or whatever you have on hand because that’s what takes a nice looking card to that “wow” stage.

Now once you have the basics the way you want, go ahead and stamp and die cut (or fussy cut) your images and start assembling your card.

Below is an example of three different cards I made using my hand drawn template. As you can see, they all look completely different although the basic template is the same. The layout also inspired me to just add flowers instead of another rectangle to the third card. It may not be exactly the same but it inspired me and that is what the template is meant to do.
