Flip Top gift boxes in two sizes

I love creating cute little gift boxes to pass along to friends or family members. Today I wanted to show you how you can make a Flip Top Box. They are so adorable, that I made them up in two different sizes and colours. I used the SIMPLY MARBLEOUS Designer Series paper that will be available to purchase on January 4th. It is one of the many new products found in the January – June 2022 mini catalogue. As you can see below, this lovely paper comes in 6 different double sided colours. One side is more subdued and the other is more vibrant so you have so many options for using this paper. For my project today, I chose the more subdued side and it matched up beautifully with the Highland Heather card stock.

To make the large treat box

Score your card stock as follows;

  • On the long side, score at 1″, 5″, 6″ and 10″
  • On the short side, score at 1″, 2″ and 7″

Arrange your paper so the two horizontal score lines are at the top (see template below). Cut away the small square in the bottom right hand corner. Cut up the vertical lines from the bottom up to the first horizontal score line. Wedge the two smaller flaps leaving the larger rectangles with straight lines.

At the top of the paper, cut away the two small squares and the two large rectangles on the right hand side. Turn your paper sideways and cut along the horizontal score lines up to the vertical score line for both the two small squares, leaving the large rectangle alone. This will become your lid that flips down over the main box.

You paper should now look like this.

Burnish all the score lines with your bone folder to give a nice crease to your fold lines. Adhere your front and back DSP panels to the two large rectangles. Add the vertical panels to the middle and right panel. Add your lid panels to the two top panels. Fold down the two lid panels towards the back rectangle and crease to create your hinge.

Add adhesive to the left panel and close up your box. For the bottom of the box, fold up the back rectangle, then the two smaller side flaps. Add adhesive to the front rectangle and fold up to close, ensuring your corners are squared off.

To create your lid, add adhesive to the two bottom squares and then fold the top squares over onto them. Don’t worry if they are not perfectly aligned. Now fold your lid backwards and trim from the corner of the lid to the hinge at a diagonal. This will allow your lid to fold over the main portion of the box.

To Decorate the front of the box, I wrapped ribbon around from top to bottom and tied a bow in the front. I die cut the two layering ovals and stamped my greeting. For a little added decor, I punched out two small blossoms and added a bit of glittered gems to the center of the flower, before adhering them to the front of the box. I used some retired products for the decoration but you could use whatever you have on hand to decorate the front of the box.

Eh Voila!

I made these boxes in two sizes and I love how they turned out.

The smaller one measures 2″ x 3″ x 3/4″ and is the perfect size to hold 3 lip balms or some small treats. I did not add DSP to the sides of the smaller box.

The larger one measures 4″ x 5″ x 1″ so you can fill it with larger items or treats. You can also see just how beautiful the SIMPLY MARBLEOUS DSP is.

Both gift boxes are made the exact same way. I have included the measurements for the smaller box below. These gift boxes make a perfect thank you gift, a hostess gift or a “just because” gift.
