Today I would like to show you how to make an Impossible box. I am not sure why it’s called that because it’s so easy to make and I just love how the box and lid are attached, without really looking attached. How cool is that? All you need is one piece of card stock and some patterned Designer Series Paper to decorate your box.
To Make this box
Score your card stock on the long side at 2″, 7″, 8″ and 9″. Now turn you paper clockwise and score the card stock on the short side at 2″, 4″, 6″ and 8″
Once you have scored your paper turn your card stock back so the three score lines are at the top of your paper with the smaller vertical scored line is on the right. Fold down at the second score line as shown and burnish with your bone folder. Mark your card stock with a pencil at 1″, 3″, 5″ and 7″. Cut along the vertical score lines to the horizontal score line. Now cut diagonally (to the left) from the pencil mark to the horizontal score line below. Cut away the top right rectangle as well, wedging it just a little.
Your cuts should now look like this.
Once you have made your cuts, erase your pencil marks and open it up. Fold and burnish your horizontal score lines as shown. The first score line from the top, will be a mountain fold, the second score line is a Valley fold (already done) and the third score line will be a mountain fold as well.
For the bottom of your card stock, cut along the vertical score lines up to the horizontal score line. Wedge three of the flaps, leaving the second from the left with straight lines. Cut away the bottom rectangle and wedge it as well.
Your paper should now look like this. Fold and burnish all the remaining score lines.
Before you put the box together, you will want to add your Designer Series Paper. I matted the Designer Series paper to the black card stock and adhered it to the bottom of each panel, just above the bottom horizontal score line. You can see that it doesn’t fully cover the panel but that’s ok, because that portion will be covered by the lid once the box is put together.
Now flip the card stock over and add the the pieces for the lid and then flip back.
To close up your box, add adhesive to the long rectangle piece ONLY and adhere it to the opposite edge, closing up your box. DO NOT add adhesive to the small flap just yet. Fold up the flaps on the bottom and add adhesive to the flap that isn’t wedged to secure. Gently fold down the lid portion along the score lines, to close up the lid. Once you are happy with the fit, add adhesive to the small flap and close it up, holding it in place for a minute to secure it.
Once your lid is secure, turn the flap piece to the back and decorate the front as you like.
To fill the box, just pull up the lid and the top will open up so you can fill your box. As you can see, I made several of these boxes with decorated fronts.
When closed up, the finished box is 5″ high and 2″ square. I also made a smaller box and will share that along with a rectangle box made the same way on another post.
So now the impossible box is now possible plus they make a perfect gift box for someone. Give it a try and if you need any help please don’t hesitate to reach out. I can help.
