If you are like me, you have a stack of beautiful Designer Series Paper. This is a wonderful way to use up your Designer Series Paper and make your own gift bags for any season.
I decided that with Christmas coming, it is a great time to use up some of that paper to make some lovely gift bags for gift giving. These bags are a great size and they fold flat for easy storage. The bag itself is 8″ high x 8″ wide and 3″ in depth so it’s a great size for gift giving. You could even re-enforce the bottom of the bag by adding a piece of 3″ x 8″ cardboard if you needed to.
These bags are really easy to make, although the instructions are a bit long and the best part is you don’t need a lot of supplies.
Supplies required
- 12″ x 12″ double sided Designer Series Paper (you will need two)
- 10″ of ribbon (x 2) for the handles.
- Strong Adhesive – Tear and Tape or Stampin’ Seal Plus
- Scoring tool
- Scissors
To Make these bags
Front of the bag (first DSP 12” x12” paper)
Place the patterned paper you want to see on the outside of the bag, at the top of the page.
Score as follows;
- 1 ½” from the top down to 7 ½”
- 3” All the way down to the bottom
- 11” All the way down to the bottom
Turn your paper so the top of the paper is on the right hand side
Score as follows;
- 3” – All the way down to the bottom
- 4 ½” score down to the second score line
Flip your paper over to the back side (top of page, still on the right hand side)
4 ½” score down to the first score line
Flip your paper back over
- 10 ½” all the way down to the bottom
This is how it will look. I know it looks busy but trust me, when you are scoring, it will make sense.
First piece of DSP turned to the right
Back of the bag (second piece of 12” x 12” paper)
With the pattern at the top (same as the first piece)
Score as follows;
- 1 ½” from the top down to 7 ½”
- 3” All the way down to the bottom
- 11” All the way down to the bottom
Turn your paper so the top of the page is on the right hand side
Score as follows;
- 3” All the way down to the bottom
- 4 ½” All the way down to the bottom
- 10 ½” all the way down to the bottom
This is how it will look
Both pieces of Paper
Find the 1 ½” and 7 ½” intersection and from the 7 ½” mark, score two diagonal line, one to the left and the other to the right, down to the next score line. Fold and burnish all the straight score lines on both pieces of paper and gently fold the diagonal score lines using your finger.
With the 1” section on your right and the pattern at the top, cut out the bottom right rectangle and cut a wedge at the score line.
Cut the bottom vertical score line up the horizontal score line. DO not wedge.
To put your bag together,
For the top of your bag, fold over the paper at the first score line and apply adhesive. This is the part that will show on the outside of the bag.
Apply a strong adhesive to the small flap on the right and attach to the back piece as shown below. I placed them side by side so you can see where the front flap will attach to the back piece. You can then attach the back flap to the front piece in the same way. This will form your bag. To close up the bottom of the bag, fold in the the back flap first at the bottom, then adhere your side flaps before adhering the front flap. This way you won’t see the side flaps on the inside of the bag.
Once the bag is complete, gently close up you bag by squeezing the sides together working your way down from the top and folding your bag flat. Burnish your folds again with your bone folder.
To add handles, attach a small circle to the outside of the bag first, then punch the hole through all layers. For each ribbon handle, I tied a knot at one end, then threaded the ribbon through the first hole from the inside, then the second hole from the outside and tied the second knot so the knots are on the inside of the bag. You can then tuck the handles inside when storing.
Voila, your completed bag.
Here is a picture of my bags all nicely stored within a bag…. so easy and ready to use.
OPTION: You can decorate the front of the bag with a tag or sentiment to suit any occasion. The possibilities are endless.
You could also make a matching card for each bag, then tuck it and the envelope into the bag. This way you will always be prepared with a card and a matching bag for your gift giving.
So give it a try and let me know how you made out. I would love to see your completed bags. You can make them as plain or as decorative as you like and with all the beautiful Designer Series Paper, you are sure to have some gorgeous bags all ready for gift giving.
