July 30 – National Day of Friendship

The world is filled with too much hatred, too much fighting and too much mistrust of others. The International Day of Friendship is certainly an opportunity to stop, and to reverse, these worldwide problems.

According to the United Nations, the official sponsor of this special day, the International Day of Friendship is a day set aside to promote friendship among peoples, cultures and countries. Today is a time to encourage efforts towards peace, and to build bridges among different people. It is a day of respect for others, and a day to celebrate diversity.

According to the United Nations, on this day people, groups and governments should hold events and activities to promote mutual understanding and reconciliation.

On an individual level, use this day to promote friendship in big and small ways. You can begin by “extending an olive branch” to a sibling or a family member, a neighbor, or an old friend who we’ve had a falling out with. If we all try just a little the world will be a friendlier, more peaceful place.

Origin of International Day of Friendship:

The origin of International Day of Friendship has roots as far back as 1919 in the United States. The country of Paraguay  first celebrate this day on an national level on July 30, 1958.  Other countries with early celebrations include: several countries in South America, Bangladesh, India, and Malaysia. Different countries celebrated this day on varying dates in July, August and April.

In 2011, the United Nations declared this an official international day, to be celebrated annually on July 30th.

A simple card for any occasion

This is a cute card for any occasion. I left the inside blank until I am ready to use it.

Cut paper as follows;
Purple Posy – card base. 11 x 4 1/4″
Whisper White – 4 x 5 1/4″ (x2)
Silver Foil – 1/4 x 5 1/2″
Purple Posy – scrap – punch out butterflies
Whisper White – scrap – sentiment
Scrap paper – 6 x 4″

Fold card base in half and burnish edge, set aside.
Align scrap paper approximately two inches from the left edge of the whisper white card stock to protect that side of the card. Make sure the paper is straight. Using the stamp set and the ink pad, randomly stamp images on the 2″ of card stock that is not covered. Adhere the silver strip of paper between the stamped images and the blank part of the card stock. This gives a nice separation between the two. Adhere to the front of the card using the snail adhesive.

Stamp sentiment on the white cardstock and die cut using the Free as a Bird hexagon die.
Do the same with a slightly larger die cut for the foil background. Adhere the white sentiment to the front of the foil then using mini dimensionals add to the front of the card.
Tie a bow and glue to the top of the sentiment or just below it on the top left edge.
Punch out the two butterflies and glue to the front of the card.

Adhere the second piece of cardstock to the inside of the card. At this time, I left the inside of the card blank until I need it so I can add a sentiment later.

If desired,
Using the second whisper white card stock, stamp a sentiment in the centre and then using the same stamp from the front of the card, stamp a bit of design in the corner or however you wish.
Adhere to the inside of the card and you have a beautiful card for any occasion.

Keeping cool in the heat wave

Hi everyone, well we are certainly experiencing some hot weather this week. Given the Canadian winters, I have no problem with this. I was golfing last night with my ladies golf league in 38C humidity, and drinking lots of water. I even won the 50/50 draw so all in all, it was a good day.

At home I am staying inside in the air conditioning and doing what I love, crafting. I have a card class next week so was finishing up some of the prep work required. Below are the three cards we will be making. Each one is unique and requires different techniques which I like to demonstrate. If you have an interest in learning new techniques or would like to get together just to socialize while we make cards, please register on my blog. Next Class is Aug 14th and spots are limited.

BONUS DAYS are almost over

You are beautiful

A simple card, suitable for beginners using the You Are Beautiful stamp set. I used the retired Needlepoint Nook Designer Series Paper in an effort to use up what I have before buying more. Stampin’Up has some beautiful DSP’s in the new annual catalog.

If you would like to learn how to make this beautiful card, the “recipe” is below. If you would like to learn how to make all sorts of cards, please sign up for my card class and I will be your creative coach and help you explore your creativity.

To make this card

Seaside Spray – 4 1/4 x 11″
Whisper white – 2 x 5 1/2″

Scrap piece of DSP

Die cuts
whisper white – scalloped
Seaside spray – oval

Fold card stock in half and burnish

glue DSP to white rectangle
Glue to front of card leaving about 1/2″ from the left side

Stamp figure on a scrap piece of DSP and again on the seaside spray oval, preciously cut out.

fussy cut the dress from the scrap DSP and adhere to the oval, overlapping the dress so the dress is now patterned. Do the same for the hat.

Glue the seaside spray over to the scalloped oval and then adhere to the front of the card using mini dimensionals

Magnolia Diamond Fold card

MAGNOLIA DIAMOND FOLD CARD

I Love the Magnolia stamp set and when you combine it with the diamond fold technique, it makes a gorgeous card. I saw this on YouTube and just had to give it a try. I cannot wait to demonstrate this at my next card class.

This is the inside of the card

Project Recipe:

  1. Cut paper
    Whisper white
    5 1/2 x 11″ (card base)
    5 x 2 1/4 (cut 1) (goes with Mat 3)
Scrap paper to stamp flower on
    Pear Pizzazz
    3 3/4 x 3 3/4 (cut 2 ) Mat 1 & 2
    5 1/4 x 2 1/2 (cut 2) Mat – 3 & 4
    2 1/2 x 2 1/2 (cut 1)
    DSP
    3 1/2 x 3 1/2 (cut 2) (goes with Mat 1 & 2)
    5 x 2 1/4 (cut 1) (goes with Mat 4)
    Die cuts
    2 – Large flower petal
    2 – Medium flower petal
    2 – Small flower petal
    3 – Centre of flower
    2 – Large leaves
    1 – Small leaf
    1 – Magnolia
1 – Oval (smooth) Whisper white
I – larger oval (scalloped) Pear Pizzazz
  2. Adhere the DSP to the matting as noted above using liquid multipurpose glow. Set aside for now.

Stamp Magnolia on scrap whisper white card stock and using die, cut out flower with big shot.
Colour Magnolia using the petal pink blender pens, being careful to stick to the centre of flower or bottom of each petal, leaving the rest of the leaf white. Colour leaves with Old Olive blender pens. Set aside for now

  • To assemble card,
    Score card at 2 3/4 & 5 1/2 on the long side.
    Fold gently
With a pencil, mark the bottom of card at 2 3/4″ and cut from mark to first score line. This is the front of the card. Once cut, align the back of the card and cut as well. This will give you that diamond look on the bottom of the card. Don’t forget to erase the pencil mark.

Mat 4 – Glue the mat/DSP to the front between the two score lines.
Mat 3 – Stamp sentiment to white card stock in Early Espresso. Stamp the small flower in opposite corners in Petal Pink. Glue to mat 3 and adhere between the score lines on the inside of the card.
Mat 2 – line up square to the diamond cut on the bottom of the card and glue
Mat 1 – Line up square to the diamond cut on the front of the card and glue. Adhere Magnolia flower to the center of the square using mini dimensionals.

Cut pear pizzazz square in half diagonally and glue to inside of card, lining up with the DSP already glued down.

Stamp sentiment on Whisper white oval and glue to pear pizazz oval. Adhere to front of card and set card aside

  • To assemble flower

Using the sponge dauber, colour the middle of each petal, then dauber around the outside of thepetals leaving the rest white. Curl up the petals slightly to gift it some depth, using a pen or bone folder.

Layer and glue the petals, starting with the largest, overlapping the petals to fill out the flower. Glue the renters to each other and puff them up a bit so they stand up then glue to center of flower. glue the leaves to the back of flower. Give it a minute to dry then glue to the middle of the inside diamond.

When you open the card, it will sit nicely behind the flower as a display. Lots of instructions but quite easy to assemble.

Until next time
Sue
